My artwork is based on the theme of Mycelium, something I learnt about at University and has always fascinated me. Mycelium is a fungal network that runs through the soil and often interacts with tree roots. The mycelium network is much greater than the extent of the tree roots and provides the trees with trace minerals and water, in turn, the trees provide energy to the fungi from photosynthesis up in the tree canopy. While we see the above-ground structures of the trees and also the fungal network in the form of mushrooms, there is a whole integrated system of life below the soil surface. It is often referred to as the Wood Wide Web.
I have always enjoyed exploring natural forms, in mixed media. The Mixed media picture, textile batik collage and the clay walnut (not for sale) are some of my earliest artworks, created at school.
I have continued to create objects predominantly for personal use, however in the last few years I have started to create items, predominantly usable or wearable art to help raise funds for International Scout Trips. I like to learn new techniques, experiment, and solve problems.
For this exhibition, I have created items predominantly wearable items using crochet, knitting and felting. These stitch patterns represent the Mycelium network underground, with the colours reflecting the minerals and water. Other features are based above the soil level, the colours and forms found in the tree leaves and the wide variety and form of mushrooms. Some of these mushrooms have been populated by fairies.
