I paint mainly in oils as I love the texture, colour and vibrancy of the painting process.

Artist information

I am a landscape artist who lives and works in Oxfordshire, on the edge of the Berkshire Downs. I’ve been painting professionally for over sixteen years and my work focuses primarily on the chalk landscapes of Southern England. I went to school in Avebury in the 1970’s which had a strong influence on my interest in our history and heritage. Prior to becoming a painter, I was a graphic designer, and this is illustrated in the way I work with oil paints.

In 2012 I completed a commission for the North Wessex Downs AONB (now a National  Landscape) to illustrate ten of the most iconic features within the North Wessex Downs. In 2023, I exhibited at the Wiltshire Museum, collaborating with my father Patrick Dillon and Hedley Thorne. Our exhibition was called Wessex Airscapes and we produced the book ‘Elevating Wiltshire’.

Using drone technology allows me to observe our landscapes from an aerial perspective and this is especially useful when seeking to work on representing some of our Chalk Hill figures, such as the Marlborough White Horse or the Ridgeway landscapes. An aerial view can provide an artist with a unique perspective on these landscapes. In the case of the Uffington White Horse, I believe that this ancient landscape is better understood from the sky.

 

I volunteer with the Ridgeway Partnership as part of the development team and each year in April, I curate the Swires Prize, friends of the Ridgeway annual exhibition. I am currently working with another artist on a large mural for a public building as part of the Springline Project which is funded under the Mend the Gap Programme.
