My interest in art developed originally from my language studies. I followed a rather traditional course based largely on literature, but we were encouraged to explore the wider artistic context of the books we were studying, which took us into the realms of painting and music. I loved 19th and early 20th century literature, so the Impressionists made a great impact.
Over the years I drew and painted from time to time, always promising myself that I would do more when I retired, so when I finally had the time I joined Abingdon Artists, which has encouraged me to explore and expand my painting and drawing skills, including the opportunity to sketch ‘en plein air’.
What inspires me to create my paintings? I enjoy walking, and the Oxfordshire countryside provides wonderful views and quirky corners just crying out to be painted, and my garden provides an endless array of lovely flower subjects. In the past, travelling abroad, especially to France, Italy and even to China, has prompted a different colour palette and alternative scenery.
My work, painted primarily in acrylic on textured acrylic paper, is executed in a realistic style. You will find a range of subjects, from serene seascapes and busy harbours to bold flowers, colourful sunsets, and bright views of the surrounding countryside. I hope that my paintings will evoke the feelings of joy, wonder or, sometimes, reflection that I feel in front of my chosen subject.
As a first-time exhibitor, I do hope that visitors might feel a connection with my art.
