Lucinda likes to work from direct observation so that she can focus on the sensations of light, air and colour rather than on the marks she is making. This enables her to work spontaneously. However, art is by definition artificial so the development of her work is an ongoing experiment of balancing the authenticity of the mark with the more considered process of composition.
"Ultimately it is the material qualities of paint and the play of colour and line that interest me. I take inspiration from nature and still lives and am happy to work from the same scene again and again, always finding something different to explore. I try to embody the experience in paint and particularly enjoy the physical drag of paint on paper. The works on show are all executed in water-soluble paint on paper and this allows me to develop a range of calligraphic marks as well as solid areas of colour which are the true subject matter of my work".
Lucinda Foskett trained at Camberwell School of Art (Painting and Drawing) and later studied Art History at Oxford University. She went on to to be a teacher and Head of Art at various secondary schools in the UK and now devotes her time to pursuing and developing her own painting. She lives in Headington where she has a small studio in her garden.
