Holiday relief for mummies as children head to ancient Egypt!

Submitted by Esther Lafferty on Mon, 08/04/2013 - 2:18pm

Free drop-in sessions at The Ashmolean Museum, 1-4pm, 10th&11th April.

Inspired by the mummy of Meresamun, a female singer, in the Ashmolean Museum’s exhibition of artifacts from ancient Egypt and Nubia, local families are spending their afternoons this school holiday making a replica using papier mache and other materials with which they are covering a life-sized bandaged mummy. This collaborative artwork, created in workshops with Summertown artist Francesca Shakespeare, will be displayed in the Ashmolean throughout Artweeks (venue 65) alongside some of the finest ancient Egyptian and Nubian collections in the country.
In additional gallery activities, children will make and take home mini peg doll mummies and an amulet of their own.

Photo opportunity as children create this contemporary masterpiece for one of the world’s finest musems.
Wednesday 10th April 3pm The Education Room in the Ashmolean.
