The Arts and Crafts Christmas Market at the West Oxford Community Centre this year will be on Saturday 28 November (11am - 6pm) and Sunday 29th November (11am - 4pm). I will be exhibiting work alongside the usual 20+ artists and makers selling a wide variety of lovely, high-quality work.
My new work this Artweeks is inspired by the theme of "identity". Looking at pencil sketches of my family done while I was growing up got me thinking about how your experiences as a child and young adult shape your identity, and the effect of friends and community on your subsequent development. This year's show was originally going to be inspired by these three layers of influence. However, the impact of the current lock-down has altered the emphasis of my work to make it more narrowly focussed on personal experience and feelings. My online gallery will, most of the time, show works directly influenced by my experiences growing up, including the strong influence of my interest in ancient Greek culture and art (eg see "3 Caryatids" which uses Greek sculpture to express personal experience), and I am currently working on further pieces about identity and friendship which I will add to my gallery as the work is completed. My most recent piece, included in my gallery, is "Old Friends: Caryatids", which uses ancient Greek sculpture to express something about the pleasure of talking to old friends.
