Andrea Bates’s art has recently taken a different direction– towards semi-abstract in watercolours and mixed media. Working from memory and imagination, much of the inspiration has come from the book “The Hidden Life of Trees” and from Tolkien’s Entmoot (from his book The Lord of the Rings) where trees sway and confer and take on a life of their own. As we’re all aware these days, trees are living, breathing entities in our world, and this comes across strongly in her work.
Having studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, she has been painting for 60 years and exhibited widely in the UK and abroad.
Her next exhibition as part of Oxfordshire Artweeks would have been in the converted barn gallery at Hillside in Enstone, North Oxfordshire on May 9, 10,15, 16 and 17 featured her latest work as well as landscapes in oils and pastels.
