A self-employed artist since 1998, since my Fine Art MA (2010) I make contemporary and contemplative abstract landscapes in water-based mixed media. The paintings’ visual language is analogous to choices, both conscious and sub-liminal, about what is said and what remains un-said in conversation.
Relying on both art history and current directions in painting, I run friendly and imaginative art workshops in Oxfordshire and Derbyshire. I use the best of both contemporary and traditional approaches to observation and abstraction in drawing, painting, colour and composition, to facilitate artists’ development, whatever the starting point.
Formerly a Visiting Lecturer in Life Drawing at Winchester School of Art, I also spent 4 years at Visual Arts Therapist at the School of Life, London. Exhibitions include the RWS Contemporary Watercolour Competition 2017-19 and the Eastern Open, and solo shows include the University of Oxford Department of Psychiatry and the Wall Gallery, Ely. My work is in the collections of The John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, The Perse School, Cambridge, and many private collections.
As a research-led artist, I'm interested in how processes of human perception intersect with tactile-physical technologies of art production. A cross-disciplinary background, in literature and as a psychotherapist, informs my practice, reading artworks as visual manuscripts, exploring what can and cannot be articulated, and how we make meaning from experience.
