Anthony Eccles, has been invited to take part in a two man show at the Sewell Centre Gallery with Marc Thompson a landscape painter from October 4 -18th
I finished an MA in Ceramics at Bathspa University in 2014 where I concentrated on experimental work: The resulting sculpture manifests a physicality and movement that celebrates the expressive potential of the clay.
This desire for a relaxed spontaneity is evident in these domestic terracotta pots. The wheel thrown form acts as a canvas; then vigorous, gestural sweeping marks are brushed or ladled on, being spontaneously applied.
The intention is to let it flow and trust in the process. I use soft clay encouraging a looser more fluid style of throwing on the wheel. The subsequent handling, the noticeable throwing rings and incidental physical gestures are deliberately made direct and visible.
The glazes and oxides blend, bleed and provide contrasting tones and textures, on the pot’s rhythmic surface. The slip application speaks of organic hand building processes and these hand marks, and other happenings create a visual diary of the making process. The pots evolve over successive applications and mid temperature firings.
