Jane O'Brien - Textile Artist
Region:
Summertown - City
Artform:
Textiles

Jane’s art has developed from her interest in textiles. Her work identifies how cloth conveys symbols of ceremony, status and protection as well as how patterns adapt as they are traded across cultural borders. She is inspired by the damask patterns that originated in the East and developed in the silk industry of Renaissance Italy.
This historical research has led Jane to use a wide range of textures and patterns to convey visual meaning in her Damask Series as well as her book sculptures, Egyptian pieces, East meets West, War Letters and many of her collages. Her pieces often incorporate printed papers using small hand stitches to add a line or to link the elements. Portraits and text enhance the story telling of her work.
