Wheatley - South & Vale
Drawing, Mixed Media, Printmaking

I’m a printmaker inspired by the natural landscape and am drawn to striking, monochromatic images. I play with scale so that a tiny fragment of tree bark may be rendered as a one-metre-high multi-layered screen print. At such a vast size, the bark takes on the appearance of a hand-drawn aerial landscape or an anatomical drawing of muscles and tendons.

I work in a Victorian studio equipped with a nineteenth-century Imperial printing press, proofing presses, and a contemporary etching press. I work with aquatint, etching and screen printing and combine these traditional printing techniques with more experimental 3-D plaster prints and photopolymer etchings. I was awarded the Printmakers Council prize in 2020 and I’m a member of the Oxford Printmakers’ Co-operative.

I continue to exhibit in London, but this is the first time I’ve shown my work in my own studio. I’ve joined forces with five other artists who’ll be showing their work in the Elizabethan house next door. They include three ceramicists, a landscape painter, and a sculptor who’ll be exhibiting his work across the two adjoining gardens.

Please see my website, via the link below, for more details about my art practice. You’ll also find details there about my walking podcast, Inside A Mountain, which acts as a companion piece to my artwork. The podcast explores the ways that walking the natural landscape is allied to different forms of creativity and it uses a richly layered soundscape to tell a story.
