I have spent the last few years through lockdown and pandemic immersed in the environment of Wytham Woods, Otmoor and a Capability Brown landscaped garden. Secret places wherein I am able to be totally there, present, without distraction, watching and recording. The need to re-wild our land led to the idea of re-wilding painting. To find out what that might mean has entailed days wandering, sitting, drawing and painting. Gathering material about the sights, sounds, smell, temperature and texture of a place. All seasons, all weathers. Wrapped against frost and rain, learning the places to work out of the wind or sun. Carrying backpack filled with all the stuff to make images and a flask of tea, sandwich and apple. The three locations offer widely differing experience. Flat open marshy grassland, dense ancient woodland, 18th century gentrified views. All this has lead to the best working experience in my 50 plus years as an artist.
