I work with paper, cutting intricate designs by hand to create layered images ranging from picturesque Oxford architecture and landscapes to microscopic patterns found in the natural world.
I enjoy exploring the possibilities of working with paper as a material; how it changes as I cut intricate patterns or how it picks up the light when layers are assembled together. I enjoy its simplicity and our familiarity with it; we all have an innate understanding of paper and its’ uses and it is interesting to challenge and test this familiarity.
I particularly enjoy working with light and structure; deconstructing an image and reconstructing it from layers of paper. This might be a building made from layers of white paper with spacers between each layer to accentuate the shadows and depth, or a microscopic detail of a plant stem where flat areas of colour contrast with intricate lacy detail; with all of them the play of light on the surface and cut edges of the paper adds an extra, sometimes unexpected, dimension to the work.
I will be exhibiting a range of handmade cards and framed and unframed papercuts in my garden studio in Botley. If you would like to book an appointment please use the link below, but you are welcome to drop in without an appointment if you are happy to wait if neccessary. There is plenty of seating in the garden and Covid-safe measures will be in place.
