Unique Japanese Gyotaku fish art from £99. Gyotaku is the 18th Century tradition of recording fish catches using ink painted onto the body of the fish and then covered with rice paper, to take an impression. I have developed this technique using gesso, oils, and raw pigment; texturising and glazing. I travel around the world, working with local fishermen to source fish. I take a first press of fish bodies on location, then finish in the Studio. Since Covid has restricted travel, I have been working with fish from the Osney Mead market - a fantastic local resource. One of my favourite fish to work with are wild Sea Bass. The biggest I have used so far are Colombian Tarpon. I love making images that are evocative, dreamy, mythical and symbolic.
