All of my pottery is Raku fired . Pieces removed from the kiln whilst red hot are placed into containers with combustible materials which react with the glazes with some amazing & surprising results. I am inspired by the Japanese Ensō, a symbol associated with the beauty of imperfection & the art of letting go of expectations. The single brushstroke of the Ensō circle by it's nature will never be perfect, but the unique imperfections that prevent it from being perfect are themselves what makes the Ensō so beautiful. Not only do I try to live somewhat by this philosophy, but I feel it's the perfect way to consider a Raku firing. There is an intention for the piece being fired, but you let go of your expectations and wait to see what will emerge. The process itself is so unpredictable & organic that pieces rarely come out the way you imagined, but each is a beautiful surprise. Instagram @TheRakuShed
