Gordon Stokes has been taking and printing landscape photographs since he was 13. His style has changed many times over the years, ranging from black and white photography, close up details of the ground and vegetation, and more minimalist landscapes and seascapes.
For Artweeks 2020 much work is seascapes from the Isles of Scilly and elsewhere, combined with landscapes of Oxfordshire.
His photos are of land, sea and sky, but the composition and style has always been influenced by impressionist and abstracted paintings rather than other photography. The images are simple in composition but convey the feeling of the place they were taken, often by framing multiple prints together. They all aim to show the beauty of the natural world and the great outdoors.
He has combined photography with a career in research, including working for the Countryside Agency. He is currently a research associate in the University of Oxford.
