Tony Thomson, jeweller & silversmith, developed a passion for precious stones after seeing some being polished in a gem shop; they have lost none of their power to inspire. His early work caught the eye of the sculptor, Elizabeth Frink, who generously sponsored his first collection which was shown alongside her sculptures at the Thames Gallery, Eton. It was a sell-out exhibition. Tony usually begins a piece by selecting the stones, maybe a semi-precious stone, a piece of slate, fossil or opal, pearls, a diamond or simple pieces of beach glass. These are his starting point and help shape how the design develops. While making jewellery, Tony uses different silver and gold working techniques including cuttlefish casting, fabrication, stone cutting and setting. Because of the initial encouragement which he received, Tony is a generous teacher to those seeking to explore and develop silver-smithing skills, sharing both his workshop and his passion for gemstones.
