Having completed a BTEC in Handwoven Textiles at Bradford College following a career in nursing, I am now in my second career as a handweaver designing scarves and shawls. Based in Amersaham, Buckinghamshire, I regularly exhibit in Oxfordshire either during Artweeks or with the Oxfordshire Craft Guild.
I enjoy handweaving using a floor loom producing one-off accessories mainly in silk, wool and cashmere but also linen. They are in a vibrant colour palette. Added texture using different weave structures give a lustrous and irridescent finish.
I use a Japanese technique called woven shibori to produce permanent pleats in the cloth, the pleats create movement of colour from one side of the cloth to the other.
One of my designs uses a small amount of silk covered stainless steel to give memory to the scarf and allows, for instance, the scarf to be narrower round the neck but wider at the ends.
