We celebrate trees both as individuals with their unpredictability, each one it's own personality and collectively as the woods and forests of our countryside. This year I am collaborating with Carol Harvey, a Chipping Norton artist with whom I share not only a love of trees but also the approach to our work. We both work with our media to allow our compositions to evolve as they progress so the outcome is not be bound by our original concepts. Carol's work, done in pastels on Pastelmat and oil bars on canvas, is created with a 'follow the painting' approach. This echos the way my turned wood bowls, dishes and decorative pieces are made, being created spontaneously, allowing the emerging design to respond to the knots and grains of the wood I am working with. It is right that the wood itself should be as much of a determinant of the outcome as the plans with which I set out.
