I make balanced, functional, wheel thrown stoneware pottery. I grew up in a household where we used pottery made by Dieter Kunzemann, so the feel of the pots and dishes that you use - and the decoration of them - has always been a considered part of eating and display. English in character, some pieces with Sumi e style (Japanese) brushwork in Indigo slip. There is more behind the brushed slip work than just the image. The bowls with the splashes and flicks are, for me, about the natural life of the flower, in sun, wind and rain, the transience of the blossom shown by the wind blown stray petal. There is a sense of the moment. I like the simplicity. The plate showing the twig with blossom is inspired by winter flowering Viburnums and cherries which flower on bare stems at the turn of the season. The falling petal comes from a higher unseen branch, closer to the sun, and is a nod to show that spring is about to arrive, so there is joy in both the flowers themselves and anticipation of good days to come. I also show some Scandinavian influence in the shapes of the pieces. The colours are gentle, organic. There will be altered forms and added decoration. It’s a continuing exploration of the pleasure in using clay, and of using real handmade pottery in my own real life.
