No basket has ever been made by a machine.... where there are baskets there are people and where there are people there have always been baskets. Louise Arthur is passionate about basketmaking with willow and a variety of hedgerow, woodland and wetland plants. She will be demonstrating traditional and contemporary basketry all week. Working under the name 'Rough Around the Hedges', she aims to weave people and nature together while championing the sustainability and process of her craft. There will be a range of functional and decorative pieces for home and garden to view and purchase. Please feel free to chat or discuss commissions.
Louise makes and teaches under the name Rough Around the Hedges, aiming to weave people and nature together. Her basketmaking activities follow the seasons and varied landscape here in the UK. Winter lends itself to carving, forming and setting frames from coppice woods and repair work, while Spring completes the annual willow harvest and prompts weaving of nests, feeders and plant supports. Summer provides plenty of festival and course opportunities to share basketry skills and techniques with others, while Autumn invites hedgerow and garden harvests, foraging of weaving fibres and gift giving. Louise lives with her husband Jay, Ludo the lurcher, chickens, bees and an unruly allotment. She loves foraging and catching up with her grown up daughters.
