This is the first year I have taken part in Oxford Artweek. My husband and I moved to Roke two years ago and now both have got home studios as well a workshop away from home. Martin is a stone carver and lettering designer and is also exhibiting carved garden pieces such as sundials and standing stones.
My passion for ceramics started with learning to throw on the wheel which I loved and then I discovered the joy of hand building and sculpture. You will see that my work is very eclectic and I very much 'go with the flow' when I am in my workshop. The pleasure of hand building is having the ability to make pieces that are very organic.
I usually have four or five pieces on the go ranging from contemporary sculpture, thrown vessels and hand built bowls or vases. I like to experiment with texture on the clay and also glazes. Sometimes I decorate the work with slip and clear glaze, sometimes I make low fired work that is purely decorative and I wax the surface. In the past I have also used pit firing techniques and raku.
