BeakerB Pottery started from a passion for making functional pieces from balls of clay. I constantly have my hands in mud, as my time is split between pottery and gardening. Because of that I’m heavily influenced by plants and the forms they take.
I use a number of different techniques: throwing on the wheel, handbuilding using slabs, and slipcasting. The majority of glazes I use, I make myself and this is a huge area of interest it understanding glazes is an art in itself. It’s so vast but I’m keen to further explore this over time…
Pottery (and gardening) is wonderful for good mental health. And I’ve found the times when I’ve not been able to get in the studio so much, during lockdown for instance, I’ve missed it and been all to aware of how much the making process is hugely therapeutic and helpful to me. Much like running, I can find I enter a sort of meditative state when potting. And those kiln opening days still fill me with child-like excitement. Obviously crossing my fingers and talking to the kiln gods helps fire the perfect pot…
I’m allowing BeakerB to develop and grow organically. I’m in no rush. This is part time for me and as my work advances, and as my family grows and needs less of me, and as more time is available to put to pots, it will gain momentum and grow. But for now I’m happy to be a small batch producer enjoying the processes and continually learning along the way…
