ANNA GILLESPIE

Working in my garden studio in the Cotswolds, I make stained glass panels to hang against windows, and I create larger panels to commission, to be set in window and door frames. I also make glass for the garden.

I am inspired by the Arts and Crafts Movement, by early twentieth century design and by glass itself. I incorporate elements of medieval fantasy seen in ancient buildings and manuscripts and my love of gardens.

In the traditional way, I create a design, choose and cut the glass, lead, solder and cement it. The full beauty of working in stained glass comes with the painting. I have developed medieval skills in using the ancient dark paints and the yellow stain which gives stained glass its name. Painted and stained pieces may go into the kiln several times – it is a long process which creates a piece of lasting beauty.

As an artist, painting in watercolour and acrylic is an increasingly important part of my practice.
