Hi, I am Sharon Highway, also known as Mallory Journals, and I work from my home in Shipston on Stour, South Warwickshire. I am a Journal Maker Extraordinaire!
I have been making Journals for around 10 years. The first one I ever made was for my hard to buy for husband. I am a qualified upholsterer (although haven’t done much for years) and I had a little bit of leather lying around, so I had a go at making a Journal and haven’t really looked back since. I have developed my own style by trying different types of paper and closures etc and playing with buttons, beads, cords and ribbon. I have developed my style over the years and diversified around 3 years ago, adding Cork Journals to my range for those who have no wish to use a Leather Journal.
In my cosy Binding Room on the top floor of my house I Hand Bind Journals and Sketchbooks using Italian Leather and Portuguese Cork, whilst drinking tea and listening to Radio 2. Making Journals is a therapy for me, it’s like an itch I have to scratch! I can have a great day in my Binding Room and make as much mess as I like and at the end of the day just shut the door and come back in the morning.
I make range of Journals and Sketchbooks ready to post, but absolutely love making Custom Journals. Putting a scheme together with the Leather, Paper and closure is a lovely process and inspires me every day. I have made two Journals which have been presented to two world famous Authors!
My Journals are very versatile and customisable. Maybe you would like to use your Journal as a Photograph Album? Or Travel Journal? Adding photographs and other inclusions can be easily accommodated by expanding the spine. If you would like extra or less pages (my standard is 160 pages), then we can discuss. They can also be Refilled if you wish, either by yourself with a kit, or you can send to me and I can do it for you.
My Leather Journals are lined with a Beautiful selection of decorative papers, including Japanese Chiyogami Paper, which is handmade only in Japan under license. Each colour is hand screen printed and the effect has a gorgeous texture and depth. There are over 10,000 of these traditional designs. I also use Handmade Indian Cotton Paper and a stunning range of Italian Decorative Papers.
Cork is very beautiful, soft and tactile. I have 10 amazing designs to choose from. Cork is very durable and also Vegan (Peta approved) and Eco-friendly. It behaves just like leather and when I discovered this a few years ago it was an obvious choice for me to try , as I often got asked for non-leather Sketchbooks and Journals. My customers just love it! The only slight drawback with Cork (and I do say slight) is that the Covers cannot be lined with papers, it just does not work. But the Cork itself is so gorgeous it really does make up for it.
Custom Map Journals;
These can be made in both Leather and Cork, but are two distinct styles. The covers of a Leather Map Journal can be lined with upto two maps of your choice, taken from my collection of Vintage Maps, Atlas and Road Maps.
For Cork Map Journals I use the Maps as pages placed throughout the Journal. Five Maps is a good number, making an interesting Travel Journal. This style can also be used for Leather Map Journals, and can be then combined with upto two Maps inside the Cover, making a really personal Travel Journal.
Putting a Map Journal together takes research and there is often quite a few messages between myself and the client to get all the details right; Leather colour or Cork, Map choice and Closure. The end result is always worth waiting for and it makes me so happy to hear the customers reaction.
Mostly my Journals and Sketchbooks are bound with 130gsm Cartridge paper, which is perfect for Writing or Drawing, including most artist medium, even light water colour.
For A5 Portrait Journals ONLY, I can make them with Lined or Dot Grid Paper. Dot Grid paper is great for Creative Journaling or BUJO. If you are not sure what this is, google it! You will be amazed, it is becoming a growing art form in itself.
