Exhibition information

Rita Rattray explores the depth, texture and natural rhythm of clay with slips, oxides and carbonates, glazes and multiple layers of underglaze colour, and is experimenting with exciting sculptural opportunities offered by different clays.

Her colour collection of functional bowls and vases with their flowing use of colour, is inspired by the vibrant abstract works of Matisse, the Fauves, Sonia Delaunay and others. Early morning sunsets and evening skies, the painted tiles of Maria Guerten, woodcuts of Eric Slater and others inspire her hand painted tiles.

Rita is developing her Woodland Homage series of planters in celebration of the late 1830 pine tree in her garden – a tribute to woodland life, and marvelling at the social history this beautiful tree will have observed during its lifetime.

Rita is assisted by Jack who monitors progress in the studio and takes advantage of all marketing opportunities for her collection of small and large ceramic lanterns which provide warm glowing light for those balmy summer evenings and short winter nights.
