Artist information
Hi, I’m Zoe, an abstract artist based in Oxford.
I grew up in Oxford, attending Cherwell School and d’Overbroeck’s. I was always passionate about art, particularly as a teen, but I was also very interested in reading and writing and so completed an English and Sociology degree. I then went on to work in journalism, copywriting, and am also a novelist, having had romantic comedy novels and thrillers published by big 5 publishers as well as self-publishing novels too.
In my thirties, I got back into art, having not painted much since school. Reconnecting with art felt like reconnecting with a part of myself. I find painting and collage very relaxing and therapeutic. I have completed a lot of paintings, all of which are instinctive and involve a process of just ‘going with the flow’. I mainly paint with housepaint, a lot of which I get from Freecycle. Recently I have been getting more and more into collage and my collages are also created using old magazines and newspapers I have picked up via Freecycle. I like repurposing and re-using materials.
I was always passionate about art growing up, but I also loved writing and pursued a career in journalism and as an author. While I still love to write, I re-discovered my love of painting in my thirties and I now paint as much as possible. Re-discovering art has felt like reconnecting with a part of myself.
I’m inspired by artists such as Picasso, Basquiat, Cy Twombly and Jackson Pollock. I enjoy creating energetic, colourful and instinctive art that celebrates bold colour and texture, and looks eye-catching and unique. I paint mainly using house paint but also use acrylics, spray paint, felt-tip pens and oil sticks.
