Exhibition information
Helen Woolner is a ceramicist working primarily with wheel-thrown forms.
Her sculptural work begins with wheel-thrown components such as bowls, bottles, spouts and platters, which are then altered and assembled to create larger abstract pieces.
Her figurative series combines wheel thrown doughnut forms with sculpted humanoid arms or legs, implying action or gesture. These pieces are often comical, appearing as though, if you looked away, they might tiptoe off or gesticulate wildly behind your back.
Alongside her sculptural practice, Helen produces functional stoneware for everyday use. She makes tableware for The Duck on the Pond in a rustic, pared-back style, available to purchase from the Duck on the Pond produce shop in South Newington. Pieces from her new Indigo tableware range will be available to buy and commission during Artweeks.
Artist information
Helen has a degree in Fine Art with a focus on community based practice & sculptural installations.
She discovered the joy (and misery!) of throwing on the potters’ wheel 14 years ago and this has been her main preoccupation ever since.
Alongside her own practise Helen runs Fired Up Studios, a shared ceramics workspace offering freeform weekly classes in daytime or evening. This year the studio will be exhibiting work by ten potters based there.
