Exhibition information

My work is a mixture of wood turning and carving, mostly involving the production of hollowed forms.  I like to develop my work by responding to the shapes and patterns that emerge during the process of turning the wood.  Some of my more complex pieces do require some form of planning although I often exploit the unexpected breaks or holes in the wood as the work develops.  Although I love the natural textures and patterns that emerge from the wood I also like to combine more formal elements using brass rod or tube and more recently I have increasingly carved and worked into the wood with a variety of tools.

Artist information

I lived and worked in Cornwall for over 40 years until moving to Oxfordshire 10 years ago.  The majority of my working life has been spent teaching Art & Design and Photography and producing 2 dimensional work, mostly prints and photographs.  In the last 15 years I have become more and more fascinated with the production of three dimensional forms through wood turning.  I am particularly fascinated with using the natural form of the wood to inspire the development of the sculpture.  Pattern and surface textures are important elements in influencing the way I respond to the material and develop the form of the sculpture.
