Artist information
I am an Oxford artist who has been developing visual responses to where I live for many years.
This current series is my response to Oxford’s waterways which I have always been drawn to. I spend a lot of time looking at the water in different city locations and am fascinated by its qualities. How often the colour changes depending on weather conditions. How the texture of the surface is still and milky or choppy and murky. That the colour of the water-surface often fluctuates between green and blue.
I am exploring, using acrylic paint, coloured pencil and sometimes collage, how to show these qualities. I am developing techniques to express the transparency of water when the sun is shining and the stillness of the surface.
I am also interested in what lies beneath the surface so my paintings often flatten perspective so the painting can be a cross-section, enabling me to imagine pebbles or stones at the bottom, like looking through clear water. My recent visit to Norway, with its vast vistas, has also inspired these abstract waterscapes, giving them a sense of grandeur. Then to reinforce the sense of place and scale I have sometimes used the shape of a boat hull to bring the scene back to a more small-scale scene; ie that of Oxford’s waterways.
I hope you enjoy them.
