Face a spoon for Artweeks
Spoon race workshops and exhibitions during Artweeks 2007
During Artweeks 2007 there will be lots of opportunities to create spoons for the Spoon Race project, where one thousand spoon portraits of Oxfordshire citizens, one for every year of the county’s existence, are being created in workshops up and down the county. The spoons will depict an Oxfordshire citizen for each year including people as diverse as the only English Pope, Richard Branson and a member of the band Radiohead. The project is part of Oxfordshire 2007.
Nearly 500 people have participated so far and workshops for children will be taking place during Artweeks. The overall project is the brainchild of Oxford artist Francesca Shakespeare, who had the idea when working with children at SS Philip & James Primary School. The project has been warmly received across the county and nationwide, winning an Arts for All National Lottery grant for £10,000 to run workshops in schools, community centres, hospitals, care homes galleries and museums.
It is fantastic that we have received the endorsement of the National Lottery Fund and that Artweeks has created a platform for us to run so many of our workshops for children,
says Francesca Shakespeare. We’re seeking more funding, appealing to local businesses to pair up with artists to sponsor a spoon, which could be a prominent person within the company or from the county.
During Artweeks there will be a display at the Ashmolean Museum and also at The Stables Gallery, Greene College, Oxford on 13th to 19th May. Spoon Race workshops taking place during or as part of Artweeks are:
