‘They say that size matters and with 474 exhibitions and well over 1,000 participating artists, ‘they’ could be right.

Oxfordshire Artweeks 2010, from 8th - 31st May, boasts a record number of events plus a number of new features. As always, visitors can expect a warm welcome at artist’s homes, studios, workshops, schools, galleries and gardens all over the county and on Art Trails organised by artists in close geographical proximity. Details of all this and more can be found by visiting www.artweeks.org.

In addition to regular Artweeks’ exhibitions, garden designers Sarah Naybour and Paul Ridley are to create a Sculpture Garden at Oxford Castle. They will construct a new dynamic in the old exercise yard with new beds and sculptures by Artweeks’ artists.

Sculpture seems to be a strong theme in Artweeks 2010 with the Turrill Garden (situated in South Parade, Oxford) celebrating its first 10 years with an exciting show of new work including pieces from Johannes Von Stumm, currently President of the Royal British Society of Sculptors.

Artweeks 2010 has thirty schools participating, a record in the group’s 27 year history. These include exhibitions by children of all ages at state and private schools. Oxfordshire Hospital School will show work from in-patients at Oxford Children’s Hospital, The Horton Hospital, Banbury and Helen and Douglas House Hospice, Oxford. In addition, groups of A Level Art students will be invited into studios for private viewings with the artists.

Currently in the planning stage is an Artweeks’ Film Festival, to be held at Corpus Christi, showing work from Oxfordshire film makers.

Art Tours, guided by Blue Badge guide Maria Ruiz, always sell-out. Previous themes have included Stained Glass, Gothic Architecture and Treasures of the University. This year groups will be exploring the hidden gems and sculptures of University College gardens and architectural treasures of the Bodleian Library and Sheldonian Theatre.

Artweeks’ Artwines, now in its second year, is a competition for the Artweek’s membership to design a wine label. The winning entry will not only grace a limited edition wine created by the Oxford Wine Company but will also be featured on all 2010 Artweeks’ print

D’Overbroeck’s are sponsoring Artweeks for the fourth time.
