Korean visitors head to Oxford to learn how Artweeks works

Oxfordshire Artweeks is attracting visitors from as far afield as Korea.

Ten art enthusiasts and social entrepreneurs are visiting the county to discover how Artweeks runs so they can model their own Open Studios event on the successful Oxfordshire festival and support the thriving artistic community in Seoul, Korea.

As Artweeks opens for its 30th year, there’s an opportunity for regular visitors to reflect upon the changes in fine art practice during the last generation and the growing place of new media and cross-disciplinary work. Today an artist might invite you to join them inside their virtual paintings; different art forms increasingly share a platform and audience, and conceptual art installations pop up in contemporary community spaces.

St Mary’s sculptures installed to launch Artweeks in Wantage

Five new large-scale sculptures will be on show for the first time in Wantage when they are unveiled this month.

The sculptures, created by internationally renowned sculptor Steve Geliot, will be located at the new St Mary’s housing development, and were inspired by the history of the St Mary’s convent school (1873 to 2007) and the beautiful architecture of the chapel which used to sit on the site where houses now stand.

Art to tell the stories of life: Oxfordshire’s oldest residents show off their creative talents

One of Witney’s oldest residents has worked with local artist Jennifer Newman to create a piece of 3D art collage celebrating her journey through life as a centrepiece for an exhibition in Witney opening next week. ‘Caring About Art’ will showcase the art and craft of the cared-for elderly, as part of a county-wide initiative to celebrate the talent of this often forgotten section of Oxfordshire’s population.

Black and white photos of thirty Oxfordshire artists at work in their private studios go on display at Modern Art Oxford tomorrow (17th-29th April) to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Oxfordshire Artweeks, as part of a project that explores the interaction between creators and their work spaces, and the tools that are intrinsic to the making of the work.
