Artweeks returns 3rd to 11th May

Artists throughout the county will be welcoming the public to their homes, studios or shared venues when Artweeks returns in May. This popular arts festival goes from strength to strength and this year nearly 400 sites are exhibiting across the county. It opens in the south of the county, which includes our area, from 3rd to 11th May, moves north Oxfordshire from 10th-18th May, and finishes in the City, from the 17th to the 26th.

There will be many local highlights. In Waterstock Jane Hanson will be showing her finely thrown, colourful stoneware, and at The Gallery at Waterperry Ann Brooks and Valerie Petts are among a group of artists showing their works. In nearby Wheatley, it’s worth taking a walk down the High Street where you’ll find an array of exhibits, including Barbara Bushell’s ceramic faces and dragons, a courtyard exhibition that includes Angela Tandy’s wonderful glass and mosaic works, Helen Webb’s latest photography, Jeanne Jackson’s beautifully glazed porcelain as well as wood and furniture pieces by Samantha Drewett and Richard Zakss. Full details and maps are in the Artweeks Guide.

Artweeks is a wonderful opportunity to see art in the community and to meet the people making it. If you’re in a buying mood, it’s an excellent opportunity to acquire original pieces directly from the artists. But there is no pressure to buy, as Artweeks is really about offering a chance for the public and artists to come together in a low-key, neighbourly setting and share in the creative activity going on there.

There are no admission charges. All you need is a free copy of the 96-page Artweeks’ Guide which gives full information on every exhibiting artist together with maps, opening times and contact details. This is available from all Oxfordshire libraries, Tourist Information Centres, museums, galleries, shops and many other public venues. Or you can visit www.artweeks.org to download the Guide or search for artists by name, location or genre.

So, put the dates in your diary and plan your tour around Artweeks. There’s no better way to enjoy the wonderful work being done in our neighbourhood and across the county.
