Artweeks Returns 3rd to 11th May

Artists throughout the county will be welcoming the public to their homes, studios or shared venues when Artweeks returns in May. This popular arts festival goes from strength to strength and this year nearly 400 sites are exhibiting across the county. It opens in the south of the county, which includes our area, from 3rd to 11th May, moves to north Oxfordshire from 10th-18th May, and finishes in the City, from the 17th to the 26th.

There will be many local highlights in the surrounding towns and villages. In Dorchester-on-Thames three exhibits showcase some of the finest arts and crafts in the county: at the White Hart Hotel there are June Hanson’s textiles and Geraldine McKean’s jewellery & metalwork, and Amanda Sykes is showing her jewellery made from gorgeous gems, pearls and silver at 73 The High Street. In Little Wittenham, and new to Artweeks, the Northmoor Trust is showing landscape paintings by a variety of local artists, and there is much to see from Simon Clements’ sculptures and the Little Wittenham Artists exhibition. Full details of every exhibiting artist in South Oxfordshire and the whole county are in the Artweeks Guide.

Artweeks is a wonderful opportunity to see art in the community and to meet the people making it. If you’re in a buying mood, it’s a chance to acquire original pieces directly from the artists. But there is no pressure to buy, as Artweeks is really about offering a chance for the public and artists to come together in a low-key, neighbourly setting and share in the creative activity going on there.

There are no admission charges. All you need is a free copy of the 96-page Artweeks’ Guide which gives full information on every exhibiting artist together with maps, opening times and contact details. This is available from all Oxfordshire libraries, Tourist Information Centres, museums, galleries, shops and many other public venues. Or you can visit www.artweeks.org to download the Guide or search for artists by name, location or genre.

So, put the dates in your diary and plan your tour around Artweeks. There’s no better way to enjoy the wonderful work being done in our neighbourhood and across the county.
